In the water, heat, humidity, in the wind and in the cold, and even for high-impact sports, contact lenses are recommended.

Contact lenses, as well as glasses, help to correct the vision in patients who have myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Without these correction means an athlete can compromise his or her potential for physical activity.

Óculos-para-esporte

To practice physical activities without vision correction is not recommended, explains ophthalmologist Dr. Pedro Toledo, a partner of our blog Sport & Health.

Just as there are special eyeglass frames to be used (I guess you are thinking more about the frames than of the glasses) in various sports, the lenses also have various types and advantages.

The soft contact lenses are the most suitable for sports. Especially those that can be discarded daily (daily disposable) because they bring less risk of infection.

What few people know is that these lenses have treatment against solar UVA / UVB radiations and can guarantee greater protection to our eyes. In addition to delaying the onset of cataracts and preventing retinal diseases.

Eyeglasses, in general, do not have this property.

For patients with problems in the cornea (illnesses or surgeries) the most suitable are the scleral lenses. These lenses provide excellent vision quality and are also allowed to be used in contact with water (yes, in the water!). And because they are adapted by a system using vacuum, they hardly leave the eyes during high-impact sports.

Athletes usually have very intense paces of training in various types of environment (cold, heat, humidity, water, etc), so they need to lubricate their lens even more.

Then, in case of daily use of disposable lenses, the advantage is that after the training these lenses will be discarded and, in the following day, new lenses will be placed. This reduces the risk of infection and allows a better oxygenation of the cornea.

Today we have several lenses on the market. There is always a greater concern with the water sports, but the scleral rigid lenses and the new daily disposable soft lenses are emerging to help these athletes, explains ophthalmologist Dr. Pedro Toledo.

Some tips:

1 – For sports, especially those related to water or beach, use daily disposable soft lenses.

2 – You should always use ocular lubricants, especially those who have fewer preservatives;

3 – Clean the rigid lenses thoroughly and keep in an adequate product;

4 – Always ask for the advice of an ophthalmologist.

NEWS

1 – The new daily disposable soft lenses are coming up with UVA / UVB protection class I. Ideal for protection against sunlight!

2 – The new rigid scleral lenses that came to correct the vision of athletes with problems in the cornea and have ideal properties for the practice of sport.

So, if you, just like me, use lenses or intend to use them, consult an ophthalmologist and find out which ones are ideals for your case.

And no excuses for not practicing sports!!
