And to know about all the details of this new modality, the Blog spoke with the mother of the Cross Pilates, physical therapist Simone Fonseca, from the city of Cascavel – PR, a specialist in Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation.

What is Cross Pilates?

It is a Physical Fitness method that arose from the fusion of principles of functional training to Pilates. This includes from the simple training routine movements such as squat, turn, pull, lift, to those more elaborate and relevant to sports and high performance practice. The Cross Pilates Method allows the practice of movements according to the individual needs and the appropriate intensity for each person. It develops a world of possibilities of exercises, from the simplest to the most challenging.

How and when was it created?

The Cross Pilates was developed over several years by Physiotherapist Simone Fonseca, in Cascavel, a city in the state of Parana, in Brazil. She is a specialist in Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation. It arose from the need to create forms of incentives to generate more muscle strength, and to make exercises more dynamic and close to the everyday reality, while preserving the benefits of traditional Pilates. Thus, there was an alignment of a methodology of exercises with adaptations and the creation of more robust and modern equipment.

How is the spread of Cross Pilates happening?

At the end of May 2015, there was the official launch of the Cross Pilates in Cascavel and, immediately after that, in several cities like Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Porto Alegre and Campinas. Since then, several professionals in the fields of Physiotherapy and Physical Education were trained in courses throughout Brazil, disseminating the method from Palmas, state of Tocantins, to major centers of the Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo area, to several towns of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

What is the difference between Pilates and Cross Pilates?

The Cross Pilates is a new modality in Pilates. So, is based on the principles of Pilates such as Center, Control, Concentration, Breathing and Precision. The difference is that in this new modality the practice goes beyond the pre-set exercises of Classic Pilates, allowing the evolution of the movement, according to the development of practitioners, and always looking for functionality.

“Both have the prefix “Cross” that, in English, means crossing, bridge, overcomes. They work with functional movements up to the limit of the practitioners. However, there are different modalities that have specific exercises and specific equipments” explains the precursor of the Cross Pilates, Simone Fonseca.

They follow movement patterns from primary motor movements such as squat, pull, push, move, rotate, raise, etc, as well as the classic Core exercises, such as planks and bridges. They are done on the Cross Pilates equipments that have been developed with greater strength and stability, allowing the execution from simple movements to more vigorous ones.

What is the impact in the fitness area?

The Cross Pilates concept (a union of method and specific equipment) allows a person to perform various physical trainings: muscle and cardio-respiratory endurance programs, through the world of muscle definition and weight loss, the public looking for gains in muscle strength and power, and it also adds the benefits of traditional Pilates posture correction by the constant use of postural muscles in the CORE or Powerhouse.
Thus, it is suitable for those seeking a good shape but are not adapted to the conventional physical training. Sessions can be customized or collective, in the form of classes and have an average duration of 45 minutes to an hour. The recommended minimum frequency is twice a week, but they can also be performed daily. The intensity and complexity of the classes vary according to the initial assessment and the objectives to be achieved with each person.
